Everything was set up for the video chat. Tess’s heart was pounding against her chest so hard that she felt like she might faint. She clenched her hands, which were perspiring. It was ridiculous to get this worked up over a video chat. She went hot all over and then cold. What if the spark was no longer there? What if she and Caden didn’t click? Tonight would be the first time she’d seen him since Hawaii. Yes, they’d had a magical connection on a remote island, but could that hold up in the real world?

Maybe she’d built Caden up to be something larger than life while lying in bed replaying the long, breathless kisses they’d shared. Her throat tightened to the size of a straw when her computer speaker rang, signaling Caden’s call. Breathe, she commanded herself. She had to appear composed, despite how her knees were knocking together.

Caden’s handsome face appeared on the screen. “Hey,” he said, smiling so large that it crinkled the edges of his eyes.

“Hey,” Tess replied her eyes going moist. Caden looked even better than she remembered with his rugged features and piercing blue-green eyes that picked up the green in his shirt. Desire simmered through her. She’d kissed those lips, been held by those strong, muscular arms. Even on the screen, Caden’s presence was all-consuming.

“You’re a sight for sore eyes,” Caden said in a low, husky tone.

“So are you,” she said with a deep conviction that spread warmth from her chest to her entire body.

The longing on Caden’s expression evoked the same feeling in Tess, making her laugh inwardly at herself for fearing there would no longer be a spark between them. This wasn’t just a spark, but a raging inferno. Seeing Caden, even on screen, made her realize that, if anything, she’d downplayed Caden in her memory.

“How are things going?” Caden asked.

She shrugged slightly. “Good.”

“Congratulations on Ryleigh making you a partner.”

“Thank you.” Another wide smile stretched over her lips. She couldn’t seem to stop smiling. Her heart felt lighter than it had in weeks. One thing she appreciated about Caden was his sincere interest in everything she had going on. “It’s been nice, but busy. The job I worked at today is way out in the country, so it took a while to get back home.”

“So, that’s your office?” Caden looked past her, and she could tell he was scoping out her surroundings.

“Yes.” She moved the computer screen so that the camera view would span the room. “The office is in my house. Technically, the house belongs to Ryleigh, but I live here.” She was babbling the way she always did when she got nervous. In this case, she needed to release some of the energy that she’d built up prior to the call.

“It looks like you have a good setup.”

“We do.” She studied his surroundings. He appeared to be in a bedroom. “Where are you?” She wished Caden could tell her more about what he was doing. It was hard enough to not see him on a regular basis.
